"Only You Can Save Mankind", edito in Italia come "È solo un gioco Johnny!", fa parte della "Johnny Maxwell Trilogy", composta dai romanzi "Only You Can Save Mankind", "Johnny and the Dead" del 1993, "Johnny and the Bomb" del 1996.
Curiosità
"[...] I saw this film once, right, where there were these computer games and if you were really good the aliens came and got you and you had to fly a spaceship and fight a whole bad alien fleet,' said Bigmac [...]". La trama raccontata è quella del film di fantascienza "The Last Starfighter" (in Italia "Giochi stellari"), uscito nel 1984 e che vedeva come protagonisti Lance Guest e Robert Preston. E' una pellicola degna di nota perché è uno tra i primi film ad aver impiegato interamente la computer grafica per la realizzazione degli effetti speciali.
"[...] 'I saw a film where there was an alien crawling around inside a spaceship's air ducts and it could come out wherever it liked,' said Johnny reproachfully. 'Doubtless it had a map,' said the Captain [...]". Altra citazione filmica, in questo caso si tratta di "Alien" di Ridley Scott.
La versione italiana
Edito in Italia nel 2000 da Arnoldo Mondadori Editore nella collana Junior Super 58, "È solo un gioco Johnny!" è stato tradotto da Angela Ragusa.
Adattamenti - Il musical
La versione in musical di questo romanzo risale al 2004 ed è stato presentato all'Edinburgh Festival; i testi erano di Shaun McKenna ed i testi di Leighton James House. Nell'estate del 2009 il musical vedrà come attori Kerry Ellis, Daniel Boys, Sharon D. Clarke, Zubin Varla, Ricardo Afonso ed Oliver Tompsett. Il tour in Inghilterra prenderà il via nel 2010 e vedrà come regista Nikolai Foster.
Adattamenti - L'album
Dal 2 dicembre 2009 è in vendita lo studio concept album di "Only You Can Save Mankind", realizzato dalla major West End dal musical teatrale basato sull'omonimo romanzo di Sir Pratchett. Le musiche di "Only You Can Save Mankind - The Album" sono state composte dall'inglese Leighton James House, mentre i testi sono di Shaun McKenna. Alcuni degli interpreti dei brani sono Daniel Boys, Sharon D. Clarke, Zubin Varla ed Oliver Tompsett.
Prodotto da Neil Brock, gli arrangiamenti sono di Tom Deering.
Il 10% dei profitti derivanti dalla vendita dell'album viene devoluto in beneficenza all'Alzheimer's Research Trust, di cui Sir Pratchett è il principale sostenitore.
